After attending countless weddings over the past few years, it became very clear to my wife and I that when planning our own special day a “normal” event was not what we wanted. Years of working in the restaurant business, and a guest list much the same, left us feeling that the traditional sit down style wedding wouldn’t have left much room for creativity. We had thought it would be easy to find a caterer that shared our vision, but after many uninspired meetings with potential companies only willing to push out cookie cutter events, we began to lose hope. That is until we met Dan and Sylvia from Above the Clouds. From our very first meeting with them, they seemed not only to understand what we wanted to accomplish at our reception, but to genuinely share in our excitement in planning it. They were incredibly organized, and helpful during the menu development process. Even going so far as to accommodate us during the tasting by traveling to meet at a friend’s home, because we were from out of town. By the time our wedding day came around we had total confidence that the food would be amazing. The quality of their ingredients, the artful presentation and their attention to detail was worthy of any fine dining restaurant. Not only was the wedding meal delicious but the desserts were just as good! Since the format of our wedding consisted of passed small plates and hors d’oeuvres there was significantly more work for the caterers as they needed to send out over ten courses. Dan and Sylvia pulled off the dinner service without a hitch, were able to adapt to the flow of the evening and execute each course with consistency. Their staff was incredibly courteous and attentive to our guests, and worked extremely hard to ensure everyone had a great time. Several guests told us that it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. Dan and Sylvia are kind, a pleasure to work with and played a huge part in making our nontraditional wedding a wonderful and memorable day. I have been utilizing Dan and Silvia for over three years for all of my catering needs. I have had numerous client and work related dinners in my home from small sit down dinner parties with as few as eight people to buffets dinner parties with 50 people. It has been such a wonderful experience planning menus with Dan and Silvia as they come up with great suggestions. They have come up with new and fresh ideas each time, though its a challenge for me because I have so many favorites that I want to repeat because they are so good. Their food is incredible. Their presentation is very attractive.
My guests continually comment on how wonderful the meals are. Dan and Silvia are very prompt, organized, and very neat. They leave my home spotless as they fully clean at the end of the evening
I really am able to enjoy my entertaining as I am with my guests the entire night and not running to the kitchen. Dan and Silvia bring everything; pots and pans, serving dishes, etc. They use my kitchen, but really come prepared as if I have nothing. The evening is always very organized and they keep a steady pace. We discuss the timetable for the evening in advance of the guest arriving; what time to serve apps, when people should be seated at the dining room table, when to serve dessert, etc. They pace the evening according to what we discussed, but if guests arrive late or things change in the course of the evening, they adapt. They have wonderful personalities so its fun to watch them cook and see how they make things. They even print a menu so the guests can see what we are having.
I can tell you that Silvia and Dan do an AMAZING job catering. I just used them for the 7th year in a row to cater my July 4th party. My apartment overlooks the fireworks and I always have approximately 50 to 60 people
attending. The food and service is superb - my guests are always served 5 star quality food with 5 star quality service. In addition, Silvia and Dan are well versed in proper food preparation. In 2005 I had a stem cell transplant and Silvia was my personal chef for 8 months. She had to take appropriate precautions regarding food preparation. Dan (her husband and partner in the business) has also been a personal chef for other Dana Farber patients.
As to your question about a dinner party, when I was sick I had a small dinner party practically every night for 8 months because I was not allowed out of the house. It was like going to a five star restaurant every night.
Probably 10 of my friends use their services for small dinner parties and large functions.
Of course it goes without saying that Silvia and Dan have also had free rein of the apartment and I trust them completely. You will only have to open the door to let them in and close the door behind them when they leave. The house will look the same as when they arrived.
